First cable pulled at Hinkley Point C

The MEH Alliance recently celebrated the first cable pulling inside the Electrical Building. This phase of work will see the team installing, also known as “pulling”, 36km of cable to support the project’s journey in energising the auxiliary transformer. This vital piece of equipment helps the site receive a permanent supply of electricity from National Grid, enabling commissioning of the various electrical components across site.
Throughout the mechanical, electrical, heating, and ventilation (MEH) delivery lifecycle, the MEH Alliance plans to install approximately 10,000km of cables across the power station buildings. This is enough to stretch across the entire length of the UK about 11 times.
The team was joined by Stuart Crooks, Managing Director of Hinkley Point C, for this groundbreaking moment.
Dave Hargreaves, Electrical Delivery Lead, said: “It was great to have Stuart with us to witness the event. It was almost like a ribbon-cutting ceremony, except it involved cable pulling alongside Simon Lafferty, our Programme Director.”
Chris Coulson, Cable Lead, said: “Getting the right piece of cable onto the right containment structure and connecting it to the right electrical panel can be complicated on many jobs – especially as this is the largest cable installation job in Europe.”
